In the early 1900’s Michael and Katie Sawka came
to this country from the Ukraine in search of a better way
of life. They brought with them a hard work ethic and settled
in East Hartford, Connecticut. They also brought with them
a recipe for beets and horseradish. This recipe has been made
by hand for many, many years only at Easter time. Their daughter
Julie and her husband Alex Sawka (yes, same last name) would
then take on the recipe and have the family join in on making
this product. They continued the tradition throughout the
years giving the beets and horseradish out to friends and
family. The time together making this was one of the best
memories.
Friends and family would save the jars and return them for
next year’s refill. All different types and sizes of
jars were saved. One family would save jars throughout the
year and call us to pick them up in the spring. Everyone who
has had this product would say they have never tasted anything
like it and urged us to put it on the market.
The demand increased, and the number one question was, “Where
can I buy this”? We have searched many places and realized
there is nothing on the market like this product. So, as a
tribute to our grandparents and parents, Can’t Beet
It, LLC emerged.
Alex and Julie Sawka would have been proud to see their handed
down recipe transformed into something everyone can enjoy.
Although the demand has increased, the owners of Can’t
Beet It, LLC will continue with the same care and principles
that made this product so unique.
